Datsun Go

In 2012, Nissan announced that it would revive the Datsun marque as a low-cost brand in certain territories including South Africa. The brand had an existing reputation for value and reliability in this country, so a budget car would be well-received.

2014: Enter the Datsun Go. The Go is based on the same platform as the Nissan Micra. The Datsun Go is available in three variants. All three are powered by a naturally aspirated, three-cylinder 12v DOHC petrol engine featuring electronic fuel injection. Check out the differences:

  GO A (O) Mid GO T (O) Lux GO T (O) CVT Lux
Max Power (kW/rpm) 50 @ 5 000 rpm 50 @ 5 000 rpm 57 @ 6 000
Max Torque (Nm/rpm) 104 @ 4 000 rpm 104 @ 4 000 rpm 104 @ 4 400 rpm
Transmission 5-Speed Manual 5-Speed Manual 5-Speed CVT*
Fuel Consumption (l/100km) 5.0 5.0 5.5

*CVT stands for continuous variable transmission. There are no gears. A belt drives power to the wheels giving you power as you accelerate, slow down or brake. This precision results in the great fuel-efficiency for an automatic vehicle.

The Datsun Go is a superb value proposition that has enough power to give you an enjoyable driving experience with 1-100km acceleration of just 13.3 seconds. Maintenance and parts are affordable and easy to find, making this an all-round good choice for a city run-around.
