A station wagon or estate car is a car with a longer-than-usual body which incorporates a large carrying area behind the seats and an extra door at the back for easy loading – the tailgate or liftgate. It is not designed for heavy cargo and is built on a regular car chassis. It has no boot as such and has one or more rear seats which can be folded down, creating more cargo space. Over the years, the Volvo V40 and V50 have been popular with South African drivers. Multi-Purpose Vehicles (MPVs) and Sport-Utility Vehicles (SUVs) have led to the waning popularity of the station wagon in recent years, but the style’s practicality and versatility remain attractive.
